New! Mentors for LGBTQQ Youth
YPI is partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State for a LGBTQQ Youth Mentoring program that will match youth between the ages of 11 and 21 in long-term, one-on-one mentoring relationships with adult volunteer mentors (who are at least 19 years old).
A prospective mentor participates in a thorough interview so that the Program Coordinator can get to know them. The goal is to make the best match possible--pairing a youth sharing similar interests with the volunteer, or whose needs match with the mentor's skills and experience.
Volunteers must provide references, and the agency orders a criminal background check. The initial commitment for a mentor is for one year. Visits with a youth will be bi-weekly at Youth Pride Inc. under the guidance of BBBSOS and YPI staff. The program will be curriculum-focused on topics such as LGBTQQ history, gender identity, and safer sex.
We occasionally have volunteer needs for one-time events,
such as cleaning days, Pride support, Annual Event support, etc. Once you have filled out the volunteer form,
your email will be added to a list and you will then receive electronic
requests for these opportunities.
Upon receipt of your application, staff will contact you to
set up an interview. Please allow a few
weeks for this process. At the time of
the interview, or before you can start volunteering in the space, we will need
to get a copy of a recent Bureau of Criminal Information (BCI) check. A BCI check
can be obtained from the RI Attorney General's office with a check or money
order for $5 (no cash). Follow this link for further information.
If you are interested in being a member of our Board of Directors,
please contact Kerri Kanelos, Executive Director.
