National Day of Silence

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Day of Silence 2008.  Over 2800 people participated throughout Rhode Island!

What can YPI do to help you for Day of Silence?

YPI assists young people throughout the state in the planning for the National Day of Silence by hosting a planning event, “One State, One Silence.” One State, One Silence was held on February 29th, and provided young people with the tools and skills necessary to plan a school-wide event and be part of a national action. In addition, YPI hosts a BREAK THE SILENCE DANCE, to celebrate Day of Silence efforts.

YPI also has Day of Silence tshirts available for $7.50 each so that students participating in the Day of Silence can be visible and united.

What is the Day of Silence?

“Now in its twelfth year, the Day of Silence, a project of GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network) in collaboration with the United States Students Association (USSA), is a student-led day of action where those who support making anti-LGBT bullying and harassment unacceptable in schools participate in events to recognize and protest the discrimination and harassment-in effect, the silencing-experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students and their allies.

A GLSEN commissioned survey, from Teasing to Torment: School Climate in America conducted by Harris Interactive, found that sexual orientation and gender expression are among the top three reasons teens report being harassed at their schools. GLSEN’s 2003 National School Climate Survey found that 4 out of 5 LGBT students report verbal, sexual or physical harassment at school and more than 30% report missing at least a day of school in the past month out of fear for their personal safety.” (www.dayofsilence.org)
